Starting Young

Sundays can sometimes be very tiring for me. I teach 12-14 year old girls every morning and counsel a 15 year old girl during the afternoon. Of course there are also scheduled meetings for some youth activities. Even if it takes up most of my time and I don't get paid for it, I don't have any qualms. Mainly because I know that I'm helping these girls grow to be women of God, youth who can actually make a difference someday and the only thing I have to give them is my time.

I think it's really important that we get to guide the youth today into understanding what's really going on in the world and start to geniunely care. Make them drop their PSPs or Nintendo DS for a bit (haha). And it doesn't even have to be some big social issue. It can start by teaching them that the world doesn't need another hater, grinch, racist, it needs people who can love, make other people happy, unite and appreciate our differences. Am I being too idealistic?

I'm starting with my girls. Who knows, one of them could be a great leader some day. All they need is your time, and tho it doesn't cost anything, it's the hardest and best thing you can give.

These are my kids! I know, I look like a kid myself.
I'll leave it to you guys to figure out where I am!

  1. This is great and inspiring that you're doing this :) Actually, I would love to do something like this as well. I completely agree - it's so important for young people to gain good values and the desire to care about something more than just celebrities or iPods and such. What type of counseling work do you do?

  3. Akhila: I do counseling for a local church, basically, listening to my kid and her problems (you know how teenagers can be!) and trying to guide her in her own journey with her relationship with God and instilling good values as well. What's cool about it is that she treats me like one of her friends rather than a 'counselor'. It's very fulfilling to be of help to them :)

And you're very welcome! I enjoy reading your posts :)

  4. I think that is so great! Like you said it is easy for kids to get wrapped up in all of their gagets (or any of us)! The time that you are instilling in these young womens lives is huge even if you don't see any of the benefits first hand. God is using you to do amazing things and that is the greatest reward ever! You rock!

  5. Hi, I found you via 20something bloggers. Love your blog!
How fabulous that you're taking the time to build into these girls' lives. I can still remember the 20something girls who volunteered with my youth groups in junior high and high school...they made a huge difference to us!
I might start helping with our high school girls later this summer and I'm really excited about it - they have so much potential, if only they had more people encouraging them to take the right path!
